FIMRC is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization dedicated to improving access to healthcare for families around the world through the implementation of innovative and self-sustaining health programs. Through its network of outpatient clinics and partnerships, FIMRC asserts a multidimensional strategy that includes clinical services, extensive community outreach efforts, and health education programs. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, 90% of FIMRC’s revenue was generated through international global health volunteer travel. Each year, more than 900 volunteers traveled to FIMRC sites around the world, contributing time and resources to FIMRC’s program in exchange for a comprehensive, hands-on global health experience. Since COVID-19, international volunteer travel has been paused and FIMRC’s clinical and preventive health services are entirely funded through donations and participation in virtual volunteer programs. FIMRC was founded in 2002, is incorporated in Washington, DC and headquartered in Philadelphia, PA. The FIMRC team includes more than 3,000 dedicated staff and volunteers worldwide who provide the leadership and support necessary to achieve our mission of improving access to healthcare for children in medically underserved communities.
Mission Internship Tasks: Virtual Global Health Fellowship Program The Virtual Global Health Fellowship is an opportunity to learn and serve, impacting the field of global health from your home. This unique certificate course provides small group interactions, each led by a professional within the field of global health and development. As a student, you will choose between Latin America or Africa and Asia as your regional focus and will explore a different global health topic each week. Topics may include monitoring and evaluating development work, social determinants of health, and the future of global health. Within each topic, you will explore regional challenges, hear from FIMRC site staff on project site updates, connect themes throughout book discussions, and gain clinical skills through interactions with medical professionals and case studies. This course provides necessary background training for future careers in global health and medicine, while also providing opportunities for clinical experiences. We are also happy to offer both live and self-paced courses. With the self-paced option you will be able to participate in prerecorded training modules and case study discussions at your own pace, while still tuning in live for virtual clinic observations.
Regional Research With each weekly topic, your small group will read journal articles that provide an in-depth analysis of the region’s health challenges. Discuss the impact on FIMRC project sites and learn about how development within the field of global health addresses these issues.
Clinical Case Studies Each week will include a clinical case study to review and discuss with a medical professional or global health expert. Cases will illustrate the difficulty in treating with limited resources, and provide a realistic view of the decisions made on a daily basis in the healthcare field.
Volunteer Project Each group will work on one (or more) volunteer projects identified as vital to a FIMRC project site within your specified region. Projects can range from data analysis to creating health education materials, or supporting field of non-profit management.
